With proper staging, not with a long extension pole and optimism. A vaulted, skylit ceiling and two-story walls need scaffolding or a lift set up so the work is done from a stable platform at a consistent distance from the surface. That is what keeps a cut line straight twenty feet up. It is also the main reason two-story great rooms cost more than their square footage suggests.

It depends on whether the wood is a feature or a leftover. In this home the walls went to a clean off-white while the original stained railings, trim, doors and cabinetry were deliberately left natural — the contrast is what gives the space warmth. Painting stained millwork is also effectively permanent, so it is worth living with the contrast before committing.

Skylights deliver strong, changing, top-down daylight, which shows up every imperfection in a wall and shifts color temperature through the day. A clean off-white, as used here, is the reliable choice — it stays neutral as the light changes, where a cool gray can turn blue under midday skylight and a warm beige can go yellow late in the day.
