There are not many log homes in Greater Cincinnati. The ones that exist sit mostly on the wooded eastern edge of the metro — the lots around Goshen, Morrow, Maineville, Batavia, Newtown, New Richmond and Anderson Township — and that is territory we already cover every week. If you own a log home inside our service area, log home staining is work we take on.
It is also work that punishes a general painter. A log wall is not siding. It moves with the seasons, it soaks up finish unevenly along the grain, the horizontal top surface of every log holds water the way a windowsill does, and the joint between logs is doing structural sealing work that paint cannot help with. Treat it like a big exterior repaint and it fails in two years.
Log work is priced from the log wall surface area, not the home’s floor area — a 1,500 square foot cabin can easily have 2,000–2,500 square feet of log surface once you account for gables and the round face of each log.

For a typical Cincinnati-area cabin, a clean-and-stain with the full three-coat system commonly lands between $4,000 and $12,000. The spread is almost entirely prep and access — a single-story cabin with sound finish sits at the bottom, a two-story with failed finish and heavy gable work at the top.
Plan on the clear topcoat every 2 to 4 years on sun-exposed elevations and the full stain system every 5 to 8 years. The south and west walls will always need it before the north and east, and there is nothing wrong with doing them on different cycles — it is cheaper than waiting for the whole house to fail together.
If water still beads, you are likely fine for another season. Once it soaks in, the wood is unprotected and the clock is running.

Renew the clear topcoat every 2 to 4 years on sun-exposed elevations, and expect the full stain system every 5 to 8 years. South and west walls always go first, and it is perfectly sensible to put them on a shorter cycle than the shaded sides rather than waiting for the whole structure to fail at once. The simplest test is water: if it beads on the top of the logs you have protection left, and if it soaks in you do not.
You can, but you should not. Logs move with moisture and temperature far more than milled siding does, and a paint film cracks at that movement, lets water in behind itself, and then peels. Worse, paint is close to irreversible on logs — getting back to bare wood afterward means media blasting the whole structure. A penetrating stain soaks into the wood and weathers back rather than peeling, which is why every log home finish system is built around stain plus a clear topcoat.
Chinking is the flexible sealant in the joints between logs — it is part of the building envelope, not decoration. It needs attention when it is pulling away from the log face, has cracked through, or has gaps you can see daylight or feel draft through. Replacing it means cutting out the failed material and installing new log-specific sealant that flexes as the logs move. Staining over failed chinking looks fine for one season and fixes nothing, so we always deal with the joints first.
Borate is a clear, low-toxicity preservative that soaks into bare logs and makes the wood unpalatable to carpenter bees, powder post beetles, carpenter ants and termites. It has to be applied to bare wood before any finish goes on, which means the time to do it is during a strip or a full refinish — it cannot be added later through a stain coat. On any log home going back to bare wood it is inexpensive relative to the cost of the job and worth doing.
