Historic Living & Dining Room — Deep Charcoal Repaint

The opposite happens — dark walls make ornate millwork more visible, not less. In this historic living and dining room the walls went from light gray to a deep charcoal-gray while the Victorian trim, wainscoting and ceilings stayed crisp white. Against a light wall that white millwork nearly disappears; against charcoal every profile and every carved edge reads clearly.

Usually three over a lighter existing color, and often a tinted primer first. Saturated dark colors carry less hiding power than they look like they should, and going from light gray to deep charcoal shows every roller lap until the film is fully built. Rushing it at two coats is how dark walls end up patchy in raking light.

In a room with ornate trim, yes. Keeping the ceiling and the Victorian wainscoting crisp white while the walls go deep charcoal, as here, preserves the room height and frames the color. Painting the ceiling dark as well can work in a small modern room, but in a historic space with detailed cornices it buries exactly the work you are trying to show off.
