Exterior Repaint — Fresh Siding & Black Shutters

It is one of the most reliable exterior combinations there is, and it is what was used here — warm gray siding and gables with crisp black shutters and dark trim. The reason it works is contrast without clash: gray and black share no competing undertone, so the black reads as an outline that frames the windows and gives a flat two-story elevation some structure.

Vinyl and composite shutters repaint well provided they are cleaned, deglossed and coated with a product rated for them — the same heat rule as vinyl siding applies, so going much darker than the original needs a paint formulated for it. Replace rather than repaint when they are cracked, warped or brittle, because paint will not hold a failing substrate together.

Washing is the first and most diagnostic step. Weathered siding is usually chalking — the binder has broken down and leaves powder on your hand — and nothing bonds to chalk. Washing removes it and simultaneously strips off any marginal paint that would have failed in the first year, which tells us how much scraping the house actually needs. Bare and dull areas are then spot-primed before finish coats.
