Basement Stairwell — Repose Gray

A light warm gray like Repose Gray is a good answer for a stairwell with little natural light. Pure white can look stark and institutional under artificial light, while a mid gray closes the space in. Repose Gray stays light enough to lift a dingy stairway but has enough warmth not to read cold, especially against crisp white risers and kick-plates.

Crisp white risers and kick-plates against gray walls, as here, is a reliable combination for two reasons. Visually it defines each step, which matters on basement stairs where the light is poor. Practically, risers and kick-plates take every scuff from shoes, so a harder white enamel there cleans up in a way wall paint does not.

Satin. A stairwell is a high-contact surface — hands on walls, bags brushing past, shoes against the kick-plates — and flat paint marks immediately and cannot be cleaned without burnishing. Satin, which is what was used on these walls, takes the traffic and wipes down without looking glossy.
