FREQUENTLY ASKED

Should You Paint or Stain Your Deck?

Should I stain or paint my deck?

For most decks we recommend staining. Stain penetrates the wood, shows off the natural grain, and won’t peel the way paint can on a horizontal, foot-trafficked surface. Paint can work on railings and fences, but for deck boards a quality stain is more durable and far easier to maintain.

Pricing depends on square footage, the wood’s condition, and the number of railings or spindles, but most deck staining projects fall in the range of about $1,000–$3,500. We provide a free written quote after assessing the wood and the prep required.

Most decks benefit from a fresh coat every 2–3 years, and fences every 3–5 years, depending on sun and weather exposure and the type of stain. Staying on a regular schedule protects the wood and keeps future prep minimal.

Always. We clean (and pressure wash where appropriate), let the wood dry, sand rough or splintered areas, and make sure the surface is ready to accept stain. Proper prep is what separates a rich, even finish from a blotchy one.

Transparent and semi-transparent stains show more of the natural wood grain and are easy to refresh; solid stains offer the most color and UV protection but look more like paint. We’ll help you choose based on the age and condition of your wood and the look you want.

Yes, we can replace damaged deck boards, pickets, or rails before staining so the finished result is solid and uniform. Any board replacement is noted in your estimate.

Most stains are dry to the touch within a few hours, but we recommend waiting 24–48 hours before replacing furniture and resuming full use so the finish cures properly. We’ll give you exact guidance for the product we use.

Yes. Any exterior wood benefits from the same clean-dry-stain-seal process: cedar siding and trim, pergolas, gazebos, porch ceilings, arbors, and outdoor furniture. Two recent examples: a cedar stain and trim project in Madeira and a full gazebo restoration in Mason.

Late spring through mid-fall, when daytime temperatures sit between about 50 and 90°F and there’s no rain for 48 hours. September and October are actually ideal here: lower humidity and milder sun let stain penetrate and cure evenly before winter. This New Richmond deck renovation shows what a properly timed job looks like.

We stain fences of every style and length, from a backyard privacy fence to property-line runs. We pressure wash first to remove algae and gray weathering, let the wood dry, then spray and back-brush for even coverage. On this Loveland cross-buck fence we stained more than 350 feet.
